Permanent Makeup (PMU) Aftercare: How to Take Care of Your Brows, Lip Blush, and Eyeliner Tattoos

Permanent Makeup (PMU) procedures such as lip blush, powder brows, microblading, and eyeliner tattoos are an investment in long-lasting beauty. However, what you do after your appointment is just as important as the procedure itself. Proper PMU aftercare ensures that your results heal evenly, last longer, and stay looking beautiful.

At Salvation Beauty Ink in Pembroke Pines, FL, we provide every client with clear instructions on how to take care of permanent makeup. Here’s everything you need to know about PMU healing and aftercare.

General Permanent Makeup Aftercare Instructions

1. Keep the area clean and dry

For the first 24 hours, and as much as possible afterward, keep the treated area dry. This helps prevent infection and ensures the pigment settles properly.

2. Avoid makeup and unapproved products

Do not apply makeup, creams, or other products on or near the treated area until it is fully healed, except for the healing balm recommended by your artist.

3. Gentle cleansing

  • Wash once daily with a mild antibacterial soap and cool water.

  • Always pat dry gently with a clean paper towel—never rub or scrub.

4. Healing balm application

After 4 days, apply a very thin layer of the recommended healing balm once a day. Use a clean finger or cotton swab, and always pat it on, never rub.

5. Avoid heat and moisture

For 3 weeks:

  • No hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or activities that cause excessive sweating.

  • Avoid swimming pools, oceans, and hot tubs.

6. No scratching or peeling

Scabbing and flaking are a normal part of the PMU healing process. Do not scratch or peel the flakes; allow them to come off naturally.

7. Avoid sun exposure

Keep your PMU area out of direct sunlight for at least 3 weeks. Once healed, always apply sunscreen on the area to protect the pigment.

What to Expect During PMU Healing

Day 1–2:

  • Mild swelling or redness is normal.

First Week:

  • Itching: As the skin heals, it will itch. Avoid touching or scratching.

  • Scabbing: Small flakes or scabs will form—do not pick!

  • Color: The pigment may appear very dark at first; this is temporary.

Weeks 2–4:

  • The color will lighten and soften by up to 40–50%.

Touch-Up:

  • A perfecting touch-up appointment is recommended at 6–8 weeks to even out pigment and refine the shape.

Special Aftercare for Lip Blush PMU

Lip blush requires a few additional steps:

  • Drink through a straw for the first few days to avoid getting the lips wet.

  • Avoid spicy, salty, or hot foods for 3–5 days.

  • No kissing until your lips are fully healed.

  • Expect the color to fade significantly (40–50%) as the lips heal—this is normal.

Why PMU Aftercare Is So Important

Following proper permanent makeup aftercare ensures:

  • Reduced risk of infection

  • Even color retention

  • Longer-lasting, beautiful results

Skipping aftercare can lead to uneven pigment, patchy healing, or fading.
